Pallets
When wooden pallets are transported outside of, or enter into the European Union, they must undergo a heat treatment process and obtain ISPM15 certification to ensure that they are free of harmful organisms, such as the Pine Wood Nematode and the Long-horn Beetle. ISPM15 is an International Phytosanitary Standard for wood packaging developed by the International Protection Plant Convention (IPPC), and has been adopted by over 85 countries worldwide.
As a result of the UK leaving the EU, on the 1st of January 2021, it became a legal requirement for all wood packing (>6mm) moving between the UK and the EU to comply with ISPM15. According to these regulations, import/exporters are responsible for ensuring that their wooden packaging is properly treated, stamped, and certified before shipping. Failing to use correctly treated and certified wooden pallets may lead to delays and additional costs at the port of entry.
You can usually see if a pallet complies with ISPM15 by checking for the IPPC-approved mark or logo on the pallet. The mark is usually stamped or branded onto the pallet, typically on the side or corner of the pallet.
The IPPC-approved mark includes a standardized set of symbols, which indicate the country of origin, the treatment method used, and a unique identification number for the treatment facility. The mark may be accompanied by additional information, such as the date of treatment.
If the pallet does not have an IPPC-approved mark or logo, or if the mark or logo is unclear or incomplete, it may not be compliant with ISPM15 and could be rejected for use in international shipping. If you are unsure about the compliance of a pallet with ISPM15 or you need more advice on import/export requirements please get in touch.
An alternative option would be to choose a plastic pallet which does not need to comply with ISPM15.
